St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1 Honored by Department of Defense
07/20/2010 8:10am
Slidell, Louisiana – The Louisiana Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, announced today that Chief Hess of the St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1 was honored with a “Seven Seals” award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employees who serve in the Louisiana National Guard and Reserve. The St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1 also received a certificate of recognition as a Freedom Award Nominee for Exemplary Support of Guard and Reserve employees.
According to Jack Humphries, Louisiana ESGR State Chair, “The ESGR ‘Seven Seals’ Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize American Employers who provide extraordinary patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s National Guard and Reserve units.”
St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1 joins with thousands of American Employers who have reviewed and amended their current human resources policies to ensure compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Many employers provide “Above and Beyond” support with pay differential to offset the loss of wages, and extension of health care benefits which complement coverage provided by the military when their employees are mobilized.
As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions with America’s borders and beyond, ESGR will continue to be the resource for the employers of citizen warriors. ESGR recognizes outstanding support, increases awareness of the law, and resolves conflict through mediation. More information about ESGR Employer Outreach Programs and volunteer opportunities is available at www.esgr.mil, or by calling Frank Huff, Program Support Specialist Louisiana Committee at (318) 290-5246.

LEAVE THE FIREWORKS TO THE PROFESSIONALS
07/01/2010 11:39am
Press Release
Date: 6/29/2010
Contact: Fire Prevention Chief, Neil Ricca
Phone: 985 646-4387
Subject:Fireworks Safety
LEAVE THE FIREWORKS TO THE PROFESSIONALS
FIREWORKS are spectacular to watch, but can be extremely dangerous in the hands of amateurs. When celebrating the Fourth of July, St. Tammany Fire District # 1 Fire Prevention Chief Neil Ricca urges families to attend fireworks displays put on by professionals who follow state fire codes. Attending a public fireworks display on the 4th is a safe way to honor our tradition of independence, our shared values, and our hopes for a healthy future.
“There are really no safe fireworks” said Chief Ricca, “because of the unpredictable nature of fireworks, when things go wrong, the results can be disastrous.”
“Playing with fireworks invites disaster”, says Fire Prevention Chief Ricca. “It’s just not worth the risk. As parents and adults, we have a responsibility to protect our children. While most parents work year round to keep their children safe, if they shoot fireworks off in their yards once a year, they are placing their children at substantial risk“, says Ricca.
Statistics from Louisiana SAFE KIDS and the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show that fireworks account for more than 5,000 emergency visits for children annually. Children from ages 10 to 14 account for most of these incidents. Injuries usually involve hands, eyes or heads and can lead to amputations, blindness, scarring, or even death.
NFPA, whose mission is to increase fire safety worldwide, strongly supports local fire department efforts to limit and educate the general public use and handling of fireworks due to the unpredictable nature of such materials.
Ricca offers the following suggestions to safeguard your property from potential firework related damage:
Remove all pine straw and dry leaves from roof tops and rain gutters.
Reduce your potential for exposure by cleaning the areas next to any structures on your property.
Wet down garden areas adjacent to structures and soak mulch materials.
Walk around and do a visual inspection of your property prior to retiring for the night.
Please check smoke detectors again, to further ensure the safety of your family.
If you choose to use fireworks, follow local fireworks laws;
- FIREWORKS SALE AND USAGE IS AND HAS BEEN BANNED INSIDE THE CITY LIMITS OF SLIDELL.
- IN UNINCORPORATED AREAS OF ST. TAMMANY PARISH THERE IS CURRENTLY A BAN ON ANY AND ALL PROJECTILE TYPES OF FIREWORKS.
If you choose to use fireworks, practice extreme caution and remember these safety guidelines recommended by National SAFE KIDS and NFPA and local safety advocates.
- ONLY ADULTS SHOULD HANDLE FIREWORKS. Children should leave the area immediately if their friends are using fireworks.
- DISCUSS SAFETY PROCEDURES WITH YOUR CHILDREN. Teach children to “stop, drop and roll” if their clothes catch fire and make sure they know how to call 911. Show them how to put out fireworks by using water or a fire extinguisher.
- READ LABELS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. By law, all fireworks must carry a warning label describing necessary safety precautions.
- NEVER USE FIREWORKS INDOORS.
- BE SURE SPECTATORS ARE OUT OF RANGE BEFORE LIGHTING FIREWORKS.
- NEVER AIM OR THROW FIREWORKS AT ANOTHER PERSON.
- NEVER PLACE YOUR FACE OR ANY OTHER BODY PART OVER FIREWORKS.
- NEVER TRY TO REIGNITE FIREWORKS THAT MALFUNCTION.
- NEVER CARRY FIREWORKS IN YOUR POCKET.
- ONLY LIGHT FIREWORKS ON SMOOTH, FLAT SURFACES AWAY FROM HOUSES, DRY LEAVES AND FLAMMABLE MATERIALS.
Ricca would like to remind the public that “State law prohibits anyone from offering to sell or selling fireworks to any child under the age of fifteen”.

St. Tammany Fire District #1 receives Fire Prevention grant
05/10/2010 12:05pm
St. Tammany Fire District No. 1 has received a $3,000 fire prevention grant from FM Global, one of the world's largest property insurers.
FM Global representatives presented the award to Fire Chief Larry Hess and Chief of Administration Chris Kaufmann last Monday at FD1 headquarters. The award will be used to assist with fire prevention activities in the community.
Because fire continues to be the leading cause of property damage worldwide, during the past 30 years FM Global has contributed millions of dollars in fire prevention grants to fire service organizations around the world.
"At FM Global, we believe strongly that the majority of property damage is preventable, not inevitable," said Michael Spaziani, manager of the fire prevention grant program. "Far too often, inadequate budgets limit those organizations working to prevent fire from being as proactive as they would like to be. With additional financial support, grant recipients can make a difference in helping to improve property risk in the communities they serve."
Through its Fire Prevention Grant Program (www.fmglobal.com/grants), FM Global awards grants quarterly to fire departments-as well as national, state, regional, local and community organizations worldwide-that best demonstrate a need for funding, where dollars can have the most demonstrable impact on preventing fire, or mitigating the damage it can quickly cause.
"We're always delighted when our fire prevention efforts are recognized and rewarded," said FD1 Chief Larry Hess. "I completely agree with Mr. Spaziani that fire damage is preventable, and we work in a variety of ways to educate citizens - especially children - about fire prevention and safety. We're very proud of this award and very appreciative of the grant funds."

FIREFIGHTERS SCOOP ICE CREAM FOR A GOOD CAUSE
04/28/2010 11:22am
Firefighters from St. Tammany Fire District 1 will participate in Baskin Robbin's "31 Cent Scoop Night," this evening from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. The Baskin Robbins promotion is being held at participating locations nationwide in honor of America's firefighters.
The Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation is donating $100,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. All ice cream will be served at the discounted price of 31 cents per scoop from 5 - 9 p.m. In appreciation, firefighters from FD1 will help scoop ice cream at the Slidell store, located at 1597 Gause Boulevard. The fire district honor guard will also be conducting a "boot shake" to help fund their operations.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) remembers America's fallen heroes and assists their families. The organization provides firefighters with training to prevent deaths in the line of duty and offers the public information to prevent fires in our communities.
"We appreciate Baskin Robbin's support of our profession and the men and women who wear the uniform," said FD1 Chief Larry Hess. "We're excited to lend a hand this evening, and look forward to spending time in the community."
More information about this evenings event can be found online at baskinrobbins.com. For more information about the NFFF go to firehero.org. For more information about Fire District 1 visit stfpd1.org.
