The FD-1 Revenue Fairness Initiative
"A Plan To Melt The Millage"
Revised April 5, 2010
Fire District No. 1 and its Board of Commissioners recognize with great sensitivity the need to be extremely prudent and deliberate in stewarding the public funds with which we are entrusted. That focus has been the genesis of our attempt to develop a plan that will lower the current voter approved maximum millage rate of 35 mills, while continuing to provide the public with services that will not place them at an increased risk or result in higher homeowner’s insurance premiums. We know we can accomplish that mission by bringing in a greater pool of people who are service users; however, do not currently share in the burden of that cost.
In the downloadable presentation you will note we are concentrating our efforts on one of two approaches that will allow us to lower the present maximum rate. We will be “floating” this concept to measure voter reaction and that of elected officials. We would like to place this unique and creativity funding initiative on the ballot for voter approval in 2011 if we feel this effort would be supported.
It is time to try something different in generating revenues instead of property taxes. Rolling taxes back based on a year-to-year decision model will not solve the overall issues of taxation. We must try to spread out the base of those who use the services of government, so there is some contribution made by all. That’s what the Fire District No. 1 Revenue Fairness Initiative is about.
